Getting away from it all for a couple of days is a gift that will move you swiftly to the top of the favourite friend/relative list.  Gifting a getaway can take a little bit of planning, if the vacation is for a significant other you will (hopefully) know their schedule well enough to be able to plan out their time off etc. so you can simply whisk them away for an unexpected break.  For friends and relatives, it might be a better plan to go with a gift certificate!

Genealogy and researching the history of your family line has been gaining in popularity in recent years. With DNA analysis services becoming more affordable and internet access to birth, death and marriage record it has become increasingly easier to track down where your family came from and what they got up to. A trip to an ancestor’s former stomping grounds can be a great end to a long period of research or can act as the jumping off point with access to local records, graveyards and more.

Movies and books offer the perfect inspiration for a memorable getaway.  Harry Potter, for example, features locations all across the UK and whether your giftee is a book purist or is in love with the visuals of the films there is no shortage of places to visit to relive favourite moments. Outlander also offers no end to film locations, some of our favourites include:

  • Doune Castle, Perthshire (Castle Leoch)
  • Culross, Fife (Cranesmuir)
  • Rannoch Moor, Perthshire (Craigh na Dun)
  • Aberdour Castle, Fife
  • Glencorse Old Kirk, Midlothian.

A city break is ideal for an admirer of architecture! Find a city that exemplifies their favourite period be it art deco, modernist or gothic and then do your homework to provide them with their own tour of the city that will take in the architectural highlights. Consider calling in the experts with a guided walk or bus tours to truly enhance their experience.

Wherever you send someone, be sure to ask for a postcard!
